Have been working this week on getting the scrappy puff quilt done for Alans' chair.  Have the back completed, and now am onto the seat.

So here is the top cover, it has a calico backing that slips over the back of the chair

and here is a close up of the back.  The quilt laying over the chair is one of the first quilts I made.  It was a rail fence, and I carefully cut out all the fabric and assembled it, and then found that it had frayed here and there over the quilt.  

So I stuck those self adhesive patches over the frayed stitch lines and now I find the patches are losing their grip, so I suppose I will have to hand sew them all on!  Cheap and nasty fabric, it was!

Now here is a closer close up ( I'm getting carried away here, aren't I!!) This shows the long strip I sewed along the bottom to slip between the top of the chair and the seat, to keep it secure.

It is also stuffed with stuffing (boy I love stuffing these puffs with stuffing!!)

So now i only have these puffs left, so it's time to start cutting  for the seat area. 

I didn't work this out too well, I have to cut the squares manually, don't have a template to do it by machine!

Next time i'll think more deeply about sizes...

So here i go again, trusty cutting board and cutter, madly cutting 5 3/4 squares!

What a silly size.

Fabrics to the right of me, squares to the left - i need 56 squares for the seat.

It's going to be a long weekend!

So I have worked out a really simple way of assembling this quilt, but no one seems to be interested in seeing it, so I haven't posted it yet.

Hi everyone! Welcome to Saturdays Scraps, have something interesting to share with you tonight.

Before I go any further, I dislike these ads that have suddenly appeared on this blog, and am trying to have them removed as I type.  So rest assured they will not be here for long.

Alan's seat in the TV room is very hard, with not much padding. So I decided to make a puff quilt to put on it and hopefully make it more comfortable.

My puffs are not too large, because I felt that large ones would flatten too quickly and be uncomfortable, so my backing is simply unbleached calico cut into 3 1/2" squares

The tops are scrappy ( of course) and cut at 5 1/2"

It is really fun putting them together, and stuffing them with fibrefill then sewing them shut. I'm getting quite fast at it now, I don't even use pins to hold them and I do the pleats also without pinning!

I sewed 7 of them together and did it with the seam at the back of the block, because I was going to line the back with another fabric but I then changed my mind because that was too hard! So I unpicked those blue ones in the picture and did this instead:-

I'm doing a sort of raggy puff quilt, joining the squares to the front so I don't have to line the back because it will be smooth now. I have some ideas in mind to make the assembly of these babies even more simple, so I'll work on it, and if you say you would like to know, I'll do a little tutorial on it through the week.

Welcome friends, to Saturdays Scraps today!

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments on our garden post yesterday, I am humbled by your comments.  We do love our garden and spend lots of time out there, it is a real joy for us. It is lovely to think that you appreciate it as well.

Well now, it's been a while since the last Saturday Scraps, and lots of things have been done.

Can anyone tell me why I h ave to start a new top when I have so many to back and bind? As soon as i see a pattern I like, I have to dive in and give it a go, ignoring the 12 or 13 that I already have to finish!

Never mind, here's the current scrappy:

It is a kaleidoscope pattern with 12" blocks.  I am simply joining them as i go - should be a nice bright quilt, shouldn't it?

Sujata from the Root Connection, has a fabulous tutorial on her gorgeous quilt, Organised Chaos.

It is beautiful, and that is next on my list!

Bags and bags of scraps , along with some doll quilts and other secret stuff, on the table in my Outdoor Sewing Room.

I need to clean up my sewing room inside, so until I do, I will work out here - it's quite pleasant.

Green Tea and Sweet Beans is nearing completion also, I was able to do some hand sewing on this while in hospital.  Won't show any more until it is finished now!

Welcome friends, to Saturdays Scraps!

I' ve been a bit sick this week, and absolutely unable to sit at my sewing machine, so I have nothing to show today.

Isn't that awful! I have mainly been sleeping and sitting and sleeping and walking a bit, and then resting some more. It's a problem with my lungs and even the oxygen is not helping at the moment.

I blame it on the weather really, for the past two weeks we have had between 30 and 40 degrees celsius and unbelievable smoke from burning bush fires around. So I suppose the poor old lungs have just said "Enough, I give up!!!", so I just have to take things very easy until my appointment with my respiratory surgeon next Tuesday.

So even thou I have no scrappy quilting to show, I now rely on yu to sign up with some and make me feel better (notice the tinee tiny bit of blackmail in that?)

Saturdays Scraps

Hello everyone, welcome to Saturday Scraps ,I have a few things to show you tonight - perhaps you have some things to show as well??

My Green Tea and Sweet Beans is coming along very well - here i am up to the clamshell sewing - they're devils, those clamshells, not at all easy to get along with!

They will probably all end up crooked, and it won't be my fault, they just won't cooperate!!

Now before we look at the following photographs, I have never made flying Geese! Do you believe that? Truely, I have never done them because I thought they were too hard to sew, but then I was looking at UTube one day, and there were all these videos on sewing flying geese, so of course I had to try following a bit on making 4 geese at a time.

Don't ask me for instructions, but it works! and it's pretty fast! and they turned out not too bad!

The colours in these pink ones are too close together to see whats happening really, so I will use this one for a bag for my friend who is undergoing chemo at the moment for bowel cancer.  

She uses the bag to hold the tube of drugs that she has to wear constantly.  This size will make a bag - I simply make a lining to fit (I add a pocket to the lining), and a long handle to go over her shoulder and across her chest, and she is perfectly comfortable with them, so of course I am glad to make them up for her.

These geese are made the same way - I will be making something with these ones and also the next ones:

 I made these ones individually, which I do not recommend, takes too long and they come out different sizes!

I'm really not that in to measuring every single piece of fabric when I make anything!!

But these will become something on the new little OOps!! I almost forgot, !!I can't tell you what they will become, because they haven't become it yet and that will give the game away!!!

Welcome back to the first Saturday's Scraps of 2014!

I hope everyone did have a lovely Christmas and New Year, now we are right back in the midst of it all!

I'm not making any new year resolutions

Apart from a few!

• I need some yardage to make some baby quilts for bubs that are due in 2014
• I need yardage to use with my scraps for something different (for me anyhow!)

Here's what  have been up to this week:

Still using up these 5" squares that I had - I'm pleased with how they have turned out.  These will be used in another scrappy quilt in the border.  Aren't the colours gorgeous!

These next few pictures are just close ups of the wonky stars I have done with this fabric - the colours are so strong, I love it!!

They all turned out so good - now back into the scrap bin for more!!

Remember this cute little house quilt I showed you Here  ?  Well, today I have been madly sewing the parts to finish it! You can see the vertical strip row to the right, and each strip is around 6 1/2" wide, the quilt needed it!

So I am sewing strips together, and blocks

For something a little different, this star was sent to me by a lady named Ank, from the Netherlands, to go on my star quilt.  It is beautiful as she has done it all by hand.

Saturdays Scraps

Hi everyone, glad to see you back!

Did you see the gorgeous quilts from last week, that Jean from Selep Imaging joined in with? They were simply beautiful!

We could all do that too, you know. We just have to believe we can, and we will!

Well I have had a busy week, what with learning html(!!) and sewing, the week just flew by!

I have begun tying my quilt, I'm about 20% through it now - boy, it does take some time (and it gets VERY boring!)...

Today I started sewing up all those millions of half square triangles that I have in a container ( we all have them, don't we? Can't throw them out, but don't know what to do with them?)
Mine are about to become the next round of the next medallion quilt ( which may have changed since last week - why can't i just start one thing and finish it??)

So here are a few of the triangles, only a small amount - I still  have half a million more to sew - it takes forever, along with some more bits and bobs:

I was thinking of using this star for a centre, what do you think about that?  It's a Malka Dubrawsky collection of  prints  - by Moda of course! We DON'T go there, do we? Anyhow I want to use them up, so this seemed a good way to do just that!

So please let me know what you think of that little bit as well, won't you?

Saturdays Scraps

Hi everyone - sorry I haven't been  here for a while - Alan and I have just come home from a little holiday up at Coolum.

Coolum is a lovely little town with a dog friendly beach, so of course, we took Tommy and Priscilla with us!  Had a very lazy, relaxed time, and now we are home and raring to go! I'll post some pictures later, I keep forgetting to get the little camera out of the car!

So, here we are again, I didn't have any sewing time at all while I was away, but have done quite a bit since getting home!

Here is Dolly Medallion Quilt, she says she is finished now - just needs backing and binding - do you agree?

I've been making some improv trees this afternoon - they are such fun - I'm going to use them in the next medallion quilt!

Remember this little dolly? She will get the trees after a plain border.

Here are the three that I have made so far, with  her:

Don't ever, ever mention Moda fabric to me ever, ever again!!  I have had a Moda jelly roll in my cupboard for about a week or so, thinking I would use it in something special I am doing.

Well, was that a mistake? YES it was!! No two lengths were the same size, widthways, the lengths were cut crooked, which meant I couldn't use them in the project 'cos they looked stupid!

They pulled and it left marks on them when I cut them, and they lost so much cotton dust, my sewing room looks like it has snowed!!

I have never had to use such disgusting fabric, absolutely horrible, horrible, horrible!!

I even used a few lengths of it in the Dolly Medallion Quilt just to get rid of some of it - it will now go to the bottom of my scrap pile.Enough of my ranting, just had to get that one off my chest as I have spent hours and hours fighting the stuff!
